First time on the site?

Let me take this opportunity to welcome you! I hope you find the site entertaining and enlightening. Here is a short version about how Let's J.am operates on a day to day basis:

  1. There are three basic tracks to worry about on Let'sJ.am. Starter tracks, stacked tracks, and layers. The first post of a jam should have a starter, or something to get us going, and each subsequent reply with a new layer should contain a stacked track (the full mix) and the layer alone.
  2. MP3's (for starter and stacked tracks) should be built with LAME at --alt-preset standard. OGG's (for layers) should be set at 0.6. We use REAPER as our official (free) recording/multi-track software.
  3. Avatars are controlled by Gravatar.
  4. You retain the rights to whatever music you upload. But we can showcase it for indirect profit.
  5. All users follow the golden rule.
  6. Tutorials are basically wikis. Everyone sees what you write, its indelible.

And here is the extended version of the above:

  1. Jams work like this: the starter is exactly that, it will be the base of the jam. The starter could be a sweet drum beat you made. It gives the community something to work off of. Each successive layer is provided separately (layer) and pre-mixed with all previous layers (stacked). This split allows for everyone to listen to the stacked mp3, but remix the full compilation at will with the layers.
  2. Starter and stacked tracks must be MP3s, and at the bit rate of around 192kbps (VBR or CBR is fine). The official bitrate is --alt-preset standard with the LAME MP3 encoder (if you are using Reaper, thats 96 minimum and 256 maximum, VBR quality at 2). Our official multitrack editor or recording interface is REAPER. Check out the How to use REAPER tutorial for more information on its use.
  3. Avatars are hosted by Gravatar, just sign in at gravatar.com with the same email you have here. Everything else is automatic.
  4. All files' rights remain solely to the uploading party unless written expressly otherwise. Any subsequent modifications' or additions' rights are distributed equally between contributing members unless written expressly otherwise. Let's J.am retains the right to publicly perform or display your works for indirect profit (which means, we can't make money of it directly, for example: selling a CD, without your permission).
  5. Users are expected to abide by general rules of courtesy, failure to do so could be bad news. You are not to harass people, post spam or otherwise spoil tutorials or jams.
  6. Tutorials are provided in a wiki format, please correct any mistakes you may find. Revisions are tracked and all members can see who wrote what and restore anything at anytime. Anyone caught linking to personal sites for SEO will be attacked by the community.
