I love playing ballads on guitar, quite fun and interest, and the building up in this one just has so many thing you can do, but bending gives it that slashy feel, just listen to it and youll see what i mean.

I gave it a little spin, not the greatest note selection at times but I think if I distilled the good phrases I would have a decent like 2 verse solo....

Nice takes guys! We should each play our best passage and glue together a badass take with all three of us.

Where did the jam track come from?

Wow, nice playing rcarmel. Lovin' it! Let's do this, let's split the track into parts each taking a separate section. We have these sections:

  • 0:00-0:51 (slow intro section/verse) - emos
  • 0:51-1:32 (first big chorus) - rcarmel
  • 1:32-2:24 (second verse/first half of second chorus) - perfect
  • 2:24-3:07 (upbeat half of second chorus, third chorus slower) - bryan
  • 3:07-3:40 (finish outro) - perfect

The last person to pick gets to snag the two last sections. I think the peak of the song should be around 2:40ish. So build up to that, and come back down after.

Make sure you upload both the stacked and tracked MP3 so I can mix the final version!

No, I actually quite like it... :-) Good job to both, I suppose I'll do 2:24-3:07 and Perfect can wrap up the rest if he likes, unless he has a different idea.

Ok, I just downloaded my layer off of the site and it definitely does not line up... strange I must have screwed it up. I'll export another one from reaper and post it....

Hey Bryan, It looks like this is a known issue with MP3 tracks.

Have a look at this thread

Reaper Forum about MP3 Sync

And yet another.. This guy describes exactly the problem...

Reaper Forum about MP3 Sync

A lot of people are saying this is simply a problem with MP3 and that we should be using a format that Reaper directly supports...

This is trouble... Any suggestions? I suppose we could always use a different format... trouble is that we don't want oversized files.

Bryan, I did some tests with Reaper native supported formats. Here are the results of my single track when rendered:

.WAV 54 MB - out of the question

.MP3 - 2.53 MB - sync problems with this format

.WV - WavPack Lossless Compressor - 4 MB - File does not play in winamp however..

.OGG - OGG Vorbis - 1.69 MB - Plays in Winamp, and I could not hear any sound loss

So I would recommend that we go with OGG. Seems like lots of people using it on the Reaper forum. Has native support for winamp and a ton of other players, but needs a codec install for Windows Media Player.

I'm not sure if your site will let me upload the OGG file format however... I will try after this post.

Yeah, the site won't let me upload it... gives me a 500 error from the server...

I'll have to recode the site to accept ogg files. We could only allow those for the tracked ones though. Keep mp3s for the stacked so everyone can listen. What say ye?

Really? Well we use Django here... Maybe you can give us a hand... ;-)

But seriously, should be an easy fix, need to handle the error better than throwing a 500 error. I'll play with this tomorrow and give you an update.

Here is mine.

Also Bryan you might want to put a link to the windows media player codec for OGG files. I know your tutorials as wiki but I'll let you edit it :)

http://www.vorbis.com/setup_windows/

Another question more of curiosity, why did you decide on 0.6 for quality on the OGG files? I found a full quality still to be much smaller than an MP3 mind you I've only exported one OGG file

And one more thing, you should be able to stream ogg files as well... the mime type is application/ogg. So if people have the codec should be able to hear it directly from the site.

u guys are the best...i want some alternate picking courses can anyone help me..is this the only way to get speed?

rcarmel's gravatar
rcarmel
Jams: 0
Layers: 36

Well I'm no speed deamon maybe PerfectTool can give you better advice :) But generally if you practice with a metronome, and start very slowly play quarter notes, then 8th notes then 16th notes. when you can do it perfectly, change the speed on your metronome by a small amount and start again. Run up and down scales first, then try triplets patterns etc... but the most important thing is that you can do it perfectly before you increase the speed.

Totally agree with this! This is the biggest problem by far: "Oh, I got almost all of them, time to speed it up!". No! Keep on cooking until you got it perfect. It is mind numbing, but it is the means to an end. Want speed? Practice that shit.

Bryan,

I'm curious about your scale choices for your layer posted On July 26, 2009 at 7:43 p.m.

Could you give us a little analysis of some of the stuff you were fooling around with? I don't have my guitar with me so maybe it would be more obvious; but while I listen to it I'm curious...

no its not the only way, while you can get speed with it there are other forms like legato picking(if its on the same string just legato for it and only strike the string once)

then theres economy picking witch is very relative to sweep picking and legato

hybrid picking is a mix between finger picking and using a regular pick

and last one that i know of other than anoth one that starts with "a" that i cnat remeber atm is finger picking my teacher uses it and hes a beast at speed

i use mostly economy and alternate picking and add some legato in there

so its all up to you but the two gretest thing to do are get it clean and try to practice them all just incase

now let the argument of legato is a technique and not a form of picking begin

As you could probably tell, I felt pretty awkward trying to line up on the downbeats at the beginning. As I was feeling the time a little better, the solo opened up a little better, and my phrasing got sharper.

Well, in a nutshell, I really tend to stick to minor pentatonic in rock, its got that meat and potatoes kind of feel to it. Its great because you don't have to think much and can let it flow a little better, the same with blues. I love guys that can rip it up and play complicated, abstract parts, especially in jazz, but I find myself unable to do that. Or, at least, I tend to enjoy a rawer sound. I am learning more about modal and harmonic based improvisation, but the going is slow...

It sounds very non-pentatonic to me.. Some parts for sure are, but lots doesn't sound so ... probably just me :)

I don't think the final mix was ever completed. A bad mix was done that had timing problems due to the nature of MP3 files. I don't think anybody bothered to remix using OGG files... too bad really, it was pretty cool sounding.
