Starter MP3

This is outrageously simple (almost embarrassingly so..), but I'd like to see what people come up with. This track is your oyster, pick a couple jazz chords and let's go crazy. Looking for some bass/guitar/keys and some sort of lead line if possible.

A little info: 128 bpm, drum only. Sizzle on 1-2-3-4 and hat on 2-4. 2:44.

Well, here's my contribution, a walking bass part. It's a little song I wrote call Don't Have A Chance. It's a 16 bar form, and the chord progression is as follows:

Dm7 | Bdim | Bbmaj7 | A7alt |
Dm7 | Bdim | Bbmaj7 | A7alt |
Dm7 | A7alt | Dm7 | A7alt |
Gm7 | Gb7 | E7b5 | A7alt |

Feel free to add anything, or start your own progression. Or a solo on these chords.

Also, there is a place in the tune where the bass gets off, I don't know how I let it slip.... ugh!

And finally, a tasty little morsel of a guitar solo. It's 32 measures long, spanning two little verses. I played mostly a D dorian, or D minor throughout, the only time I really got away from that was over the Gb7 or A7alt.

This one is short, I chopped off the ends so its a little quicker. It butts up to the very beginning of the mp3, or verse.

Hey Bryan, I'm trying to comp this (your chord progression) but I have zero jazz experience. Any advice? Voicing suggestions? Anything at all :)

Well, most simply, try D dorian over the whole thing.

  • More specifically, try D dorian over Dm7.
  • For Bdim, B locrian works. Tip: B locrian is the same as D dorian!.
  • For Bbmaj7, I like Bb lydian, which has a #4 (or think F major, G dorian, etc...).
  • A7alt is interesting. Try a half-whole scale starting on A (A-A#-C-C#-etc..) Tip: there are only two diminished scales: half-whole and whole-half. "A" half-whole is the same as "G" whole-half.

  • Gm7 - G dorian or G minor (aeolian)

  • Gb7 - G mix
  • E7b5 - E mix with a flat 5 and flat nine always sounds nice

Good luck!

Sooooo I have a Hammond M3 organ. :-) I really want to show it off, but I'm not so hot at jazz voicings on piano, much less organ. Regardless, I did it anyways. Here it is!

There's a glitch in the early section, I wish I knew why it did that. Anyone know?

I'd Play Bb Melodic Minor on A7alt. It's a really smooth transition from the Bbmaj7, and it's the scale A7alt was derived from, anyways. If you want to get technical, you could play A Super Locrian, but that's unnecessary.

I was walking on this, but I have yet to get recording stuff! Hahaha...

One of these days this bass is gonna walk all over you.

I'd love to hear you walking a line over this, I've only head my subpar line so far... :-)
